Ghost Assets? Tell me more.
Ghost assets, often overlooked in accounting, refer to property that is lost, stolen, or unusable yet still listed as active fixed assets on a business’s books. Shockingly, these ghost assets can make up 10%-30% of a business’s financial statement, resulting in potential overpayment of taxes and insurance by at least 30%. Identifying and eliminating these ghost assets from your financial statements is crucial to demonstrate that you are no longer in possession of the asset. Explore our guide on uncovering and removing ghost assets for more insights.
How can Sitehound help save money on taxes?
Companies typically liable for property taxes on the assessed value of their physical assets. However, maintaining precise records and removing any “ghost” assets ensures that companies avoid overpaying these taxes. By implementing the aforementioned strategies, companies can leverage property tax advantages across federal and state jurisdictions, recouping losses from lost goods rather than deducting them from fully depreciated assets.
What about insurance? How can Sitehound help save money there?
Property taxes are usually calculated based on the overall value of your assets. However, having an abundance of ghost assets can artificially inflate the total value of your property, leading to an increase in your property tax burden.
